What is WordPress theme?
A theme is a collection of templates and stylesheets responsible for the appearance and display of a WordPress powered website. It includes colours, backgrounds for the header, main, footer and any other section. The theme is responsible for layout elements, too.

Themes generally consist of three parts, (1) style.css (2) WordPress template files & (3) functions.php.
Whatever changes made by the user is possible through of function.php file.

What is the WordPress template?
In WordPress theme development, a template defines part of a web page generated by a WordPress theme.

A template can be used for pages where you need a completely different look or customized look.

Most WordPress themes have some default templates with the code to generate HTML output for particular sections of a website. 

  • To display the main page of a website – index.php
  • Displays the header section – header.php
  • Generates HTML output for the sidebar section- sidebar.php.
  • Displays the footer section-– footer.php
  • Contains code and functions to be used in a theme – functions.php
  • Displays the single post page – single.php

A template is a part of a theme and if one needs to add a new template to an existing theme then they must have coding knowledge in HTML, CSS, and PHP.
